Tourism round up

  • This week marks National Volunteer Week (21-27 May) and on behalf of Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast tourism businesses and operators, I extend a big ‘thank you’ to our 300 plus Visitor Information Centre (VIC) volunteers who actively work to promote the destination and area’s attractions. Our volunteers make an enormous contribution to our local economy. They have the pride and passion to showcase our must do’s along with sharing secret spots with visitors and keep our eight accredited VIC’s operational along with mobile pop ups at major events and greeting cruise ship guests.

  • This week, we also extend a warm welcome to the Australasian helicopter industry. The biennial Rotortech Conference and Exposition is the premier industry event for the helicopter community in Australia and New Zealand and will bring together leading players from all sectors of the rotary-wing industry; operators, helicopter and equipment manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, pilots and engineers.

This conference follows what has been a bumper few months for Business Events Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council in attracting a range of new conferences and events to the region including the Australian Amusement Leisure & Recreation Association Conference, TCI Oceania 2018, Association of Australian Convention Bureau 29th Annual Conference, SHINE Business Women, Conversation on Post-Traumatic Stress and United Nations and Overseas Policing Association of Australia Conference.

  • Keen to practise your photography skills? We're celebrating all things gardening in the lead up to the Queensland Garden Expo with a free ‘Instameet’ at one of Australia's most exquisite gardens, Maleny Botanic Gardens & Birdworld later this week. We invite the public to join our team and Deep Love Picnics on Sunday 27 May at 3pm for spectacular views, exquisite gardens and sumptuous picnic fare and beverages to photograph. This activity follows a string of initiatives by our organisation to attract more digital influencers and photographers to the region including securing the Canon Australia Photography Festival to be held in the region 13-15 July.

  • Operating for 34 years, the Queensland Tourism Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of the state's tourism industry, including individuals, businesses and events. I would encourage all Sunshine Coast tourism businesses to consider submitting a nomination before 31 May.

  • Finally, a shout out of congratulations to the Big Pineapple Music Festival in taking out the People’s Choice Festival of the Year at last week’s Queensland Music Awards. Also, what a great achievement by Your Mates Brewing Co to be the first brewery ever featured on the program, Shark Tank Australia. Although a deal was not finalised on air, the opportunity for national exposure was incredible along with the benefit of future business and investment mentoring.
