12 things to do on the Sunshine Coast these school holidays

18 Jun 2019

It might be winter but here on the Sunshine Coast the sunny days and mild temperatures mean there’s still so much to do with the kids these school holidays!

Here are 12 fun things you can do with your kids these winter school holidays that will get them excited and wear them out!

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast

If seal shows, touch pools and underwater tunnels weren’t exciting enough, kids are invited to join the LEGO Sea Explorers on an interactive mission to record discoveries about the spectacular sea creatures. Discover five interactive pods positioned around the aquarium where kids will be challenged to build, draw, colour and create with LEGO!

Visit SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast from Saturday 1 June to Sunday 14 July for an adventure with The LEGO Sea Explorers.

Australia Zoo

Kick off the school holidays by exploring Australia Zoo as your favourite animal with free face painting on weekends from 9:00am-11:00am. You get to be part of the wildlife for a day before burning off that extra school holiday energy on the Giant Inflatable Obstacle Course.

Robert's Treasure Hunt will take you on an exciting journey around Australia Zoo! Grab a map at admissions and marvel at their awesome wildlife as you embark on an epic treasure hunt.  Learn about Robert's favourite Jurassic animals as you follow the clues to unlock the treasure chest and claim your prize.

Mary Valley Rattler

Every Friday in July there will be an additional train service where the folks at Wildlife HQ will bring along some of their animal mates for the family to meet. There will also be face painting for the kids and a chance to meet the drivers. The Holiday Express departs Gympie Station at 10:00am and returns at 1:00pm.

Friday 5 July head along to the historic Gympie Station for a special day where the trains and carriages that make up the Mary Valley Rattler will be on display. Chat with the volunteers and learn about the steam engine, the diesel engine and the railmotors as well as the heritage carriages.

Aussie World

The ultimate kid’s festival is happening at Aussie World on 20 July!

In addition to over 30 rides and attractions, you can expect music all day in Party Central with competitions and prizes, dinosaur park and fossil dig on the Dark Rebel lawn, all-day face painting, pony rides, a hands-on experience with cuddly farm creatures and an interactive LEGO® experience.

Ginger Factory

These school holidays are the ideal time to visit the Ginger Factory for some free entertainment with Kangagang from Monday 1 July to Friday 5 July, with two shows daily at 9.30am and 11.00am.

Join Caz and Daz for a unique look at the Aussie way of life. Learn all about the wonderful Australian wildlife animals in our backyard. Will you be one of the lucky ones chosen to play Aussie bush instruments like the Washboard, Shaker, Bass box, or Tambourine? Wear your finest Aussie costumes to be part of the fun.

Sunshine Castle

Visit the Sunshine Coast’s very own Sunshine Castle for 'A Knight with Owls'. Discover the magic of the castle by night as Raptor Vision introduces you to the beautiful owls and educates you about their habitat, lifestyle and conservation - whilst the owls swoosh over your heads.

Sunshine Castle resident Knight Sir Justyn is back for the school holidays. Sir Justyn brings history to life and appears to have an answer for even the trickiest of questions. See how he makes fire or hear the medieval canon go off and all young archers are invited to learn or perfect how to shoot the medieval longbow (rubber-tip arrows).

Skyline Ferris Wheel, Caloundra

Australia’s tallest travelling, portable observation Ferris Wheel has landed in Caloundra and will be there throughout the school holidays until 21 July.

The giant Skyline wheel will provide a bird’s eye view across the hinterland mountains, sparkling sea and vibrant towns from its 35m-high peak.

The Original Eumundi Markets

A market day is always a great day out! Open Wednesdays and Saturdays, The Original Eumundi Markets are home to a petting zoo, camel rides, face painting, balloon twisting and live music and entertainment along with international market food stalls and treats like gourmet donuts and ice cream that will keep the kids happy for hours.

Treetops Challenge

These school holidays why not take on the highest adventure course in Australia, right here on the Sunshine Coast. With 100 epic challenges and 12 massive flying foxes and ziplines 25-metres above the stunning rainforest, the TreeTop Challenge at the Big Pineapple will get the adrenaline racing for the whole family.

Apex Camp

Book an unforgettable day of outdoor adventure for your kids at Apex Camps camp and recreation centre with the School Holiday Outdoor Adventure Drop-Off program.

Based entirely outdoors, nestled in the Maroochy River Conservation Park and a short stroll from the beach and river, these adventure activities offer something for everyone. From climbing on their outdoor rock-climbing tower, to running through their army-commando style mud pit challenge course, to launching themselves off one of their flying foxes, they offer more than 20 activities with something to suit both fun lovers and adventure seekers!

Big Kart Track

Challenger your family on Australia’s largest commercial track these school holidays. The 1.2km track is open every day and as an added bonus, if you book a 30-minute go-karting adventure between 5pm and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, you will get an extra 10 minutes for free.

Get out in nature

Get on your bikes and take a long ride along the coastal trail stretching right along the Coast or explore some of our stunning national parks and state forests.

If two wheels aren’t your thing, hit the hinterland, stretch the legs and see some of the local flora and fauna. Mary Cairncross Reserve, Ewen Maddock Dam, Mt Beerburrum Lookout and Mt Coolum are just some of the region's highlights that will get the heart rate pumping but will leave you more breathless from the views.
