The perfect family day out in Mooloolaba

25 Jul 2019

With year-round sunshine and warm endless-summer days, Mooloolaba, on the stunning Sunshine Coast, is the perfect place to chill with the kiddies and enjoy the perfect family day out.

We’ve put together an exciting, action-packed itinerary full of delicious food recommendations and aquatic-inspired adventures, so you can experience the best Mooloolaba has to offer in just one day.

Good morning Sunshine!

Time to fill up those hungry tummies!

Option 1:

Our tip is to head over to the Acai Brothers on River Esplanade and start the day with a bowl of rainbow-coloured superfood WOW. No need to bribe the kids to eat their fruit at this place - they’ll be bursting to try breakfasts, smoothies and juices with names like ‘The Incredible Hulk’, ‘Gladiator’, ‘Salted Caramel’ and ‘Peanut Butter Nutter’!

Option 2:

Local’s fave, The Velo Project, is an eclectic, retro-styled café hidden just off the main strip. This place serves up heaven on a plate, showcasing fresh food sourced from local farmers and producers. Possibly the BEST crepes on the coast served up with the really good stuff like Chantilly cream, Nutella fudge, lemon cream cheese, coconut yogurt and cinnamon butterscotch.

Hit the beach!

Loved by locals and just about all who visit, Mooloolaba Beach is renowned for its golden sand and gentle beach breaks. It’s also one of the safest, family-friendly beaches in the country and is patrolled by lifesavers all year round. Pitch an umbrella, slop on some sunscreen and hit the waves with the kids for some gnarly body board action! Or lead the kids on an expedition to the tidal rock pools just north of Mooloolaba Beach. Who doesn’t love a game of rock hopping or crab spotting?!

Need a spot of ‘me’ time?

While dad busts big wave moves with the kiddies on the beach, kick start your day with a freshly brewed cuppa right across from the beach at Old Bean Espresso before finding treasures in the locally owned shops, galleries and jewellers like Avenue J Couture that line up along the Esplanade.

All aboard for an epic ocean adventure!

For a guaranteed jaw-dropping experience, jump aboard Sunreef’s Whale One cruiser and witness the magic of Australia’s giant humpback whales as they make their long journey from the warm northern waters of Queensland back to Antarctica. Watch in awe as these majestic creatures perform breathtaking breaches and tail slaps. Or for the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime encounter, dive in and swim with the whales. The action happens each year between July and November.

Fuel up those growing bodies

By now there’s no doubt you would’ve worked up a seriously big appetite, so when you hit dry land again, head straight to Ninth Street at The Wharf. With an American inspired menu including an impressive range of burgers (our favourite is the Big Kahuna!), hot dogs (yeah baby, they also have veggie dogs for vego’s!), and desserts (TIP: try the Queen B loaded shake), this is the perfect place to re-dock and fill up!

Discover an underwater world

Have your kids ever asked you about what’s really lurking at the bottom of the ocean?! Sea Life Mooloolaba lets you explore the depths of the ocean as sharks, rays and reef fish swim right over you in their underwater tunnel. Discover ‘something fishy’ at the Seal Island show and learn all about marine conservation and the strange behaviours of sea animals in their interactive displays. And if you’re an adventurous family, why not finish off your Mooloolaba adventure with a Seal Swim or Seal Encounter? You’ll get all close and cuddly with some of the coast’s most adorable creatures!
