Australia Day encourages us to celebrate all the things we love about our country, and what’s not to love about the Sunshine Coast.

From our pristine beaches to the ancient beauty of the hinterland, there’s plenty of activities on offer to help you celebrate Australia.

Here we share your ultimate guide to Australia Day on the Sunshine Coast, and let’s be honest, you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the world you can take part in a dunny race, competitively eat a lamington and throw a thong all in one day.

Saturday 25 January

Your Mates Countdown

This year, Your Mates Brewing are hosting the ultimate Australia Day Countdown party.

Not only will Triple J's Hottest 100 be counting down, Your Mates will be counting down the GABS Hottest 100 craft beers. The event will feature live music, a barbecue, competitions, prizes and giveaways.

With 12 beers on tap, including the ever popular Larry, it’s sure to be a great way to spend Australia Day.

While this is a non-ticketed event, bookings are encouraged.

Sunday 26 January

Australia Day @ Aussie World

Grab a mate and head down to The Banana Bender Pub at Aussie World this Australia Day for the ultimate in extreme sport: Dunny Racing.

The event sees competitors haul a port-a-loo on wheels in a mad dash to the finish line, while their friend sits inside on the throne. The winner gets $1500 as first prize and 10 cartons of beer for second and 5 cartons of beer for third!

The race aside, Aussie World will host a number of free activities throughout the day and No Standing playing live music in The Shed.

Malt Shovel Taphouse

This Australia Day, Exbeerience the flavours of Australia with a journey through the best craft beers from across our great nation.

In classic Australian style, whet your appetite first with a surf and turf barbie - all made with local produce of course.

Enjoy live music as you celebrate the best quintessential Aussie desserts with giant lamingtons, Milo milkshakes and Golden Gaytime cocktails!

Buderim Street Parade

Buderim mountain will come alive this Australia Day with their annual street parade.

The line-up of events starts with the Buderim Lion’s Hot Breakfast at Middy’s Buderim from 7.30am and the flag raising and Welcome to Country at the old Post Office at 8:30am.

The Grand Parade down Buderim’s main street will start at 9am, followed by entertainment on the oval at Buderim Mountain State School featuring classic cars, clowns and more.

Hinterland Aussie Day Expo

Australia Day just isn’t complete without taking part in a gumboot throwing competition.

Combine it with an Aussie Thong Relay, and you have the perfect day out.

The Hinterland Aussie Day Expo is all about having fun as a family with billy cart races, obstacle courses and tug-of-war.

The event is hosted by more than 60 hinterland organisations, who will also be on hand for you to find out more about what’s on offer in the region.

Novotel Twin Waters Resort Australia Day 2020

Spend a day by the lagoon at Lorikeet Beach at Novotel Twin Waters Resort this Australia Day.

Take part in the thong throwing competition and try your hand in the sandcastle building comp, or enjoy some classic beach cricket, before retiring to a deck chair with live music from 3pm and fireworks at 7pm.

Noosa Australia Day Festival

For a family day out, head to Lions Park Noosaville for kids’ activities, live entertainment and mouth-watering food.

The event will kick-off with a big Rotary Breakfast from 7-10am with guest chef Peter Kuruvita, followed by live acts such as Taylor Moss, the Andrea Kirwin Band and Nickleby the Magician.

Australia Day Show ‘n’ Shine

Enjoy the vintage cars, and indulge in a pie and lamington eating competition, at the Australia Day Show ‘n’ Shine.

The event, held from 8am, will be held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and include a jumping castle for the kids and burnout demonstrations.

Coolum Beach Australia Day Celebrations

Spend Australia Day by the beach and enjoy breakfast in Tickle Park, Coolum thanks to the Coolum Beach Lions Club. 

After breakfast from 6.30am the fun continues with thong throwing and sack races, plus the Atomic Zebra Magician, and Suzy the Face Painter.

Following lunch, sit back and relax with live music from the David Flower Band. 

Monday 27 January

Aussie Express – Mary Valley Rattler

If you’re keen to get on board and celebrate Australia Day , the Mary Valley Rattler ‘Aussie Express’ is the way to go.

The historic train will take passengers from Gympie to Amamoor through the Mary Valley on January 27, with fun games and a best dressed competition to keep you entertained..

You can even purchase a bottle of wine and local cheese platter to enjoy on board, or drop by Gympie Station’s Platform No.1 Café before the trip to stock up on essentials. 

Nutri-Grain Iron X

Take a break from the barbie and enjoy some racing. Don’t miss Nutri-Grain Iron X in Mooloolaba. This race will combine traditional elite iron racing with innovative and exciting new ocean and fitness disciplines. It’s set to be the most intimidating and spectacular elite iron race ever held.
