Your hit-list for after-dark summer fun on the Sunshine Coast

There's never been a better place for sunset cocktails, moonlight cinema on the beach, and end of year catch ups. 

1. Sunset cruising

Mooloolaba canals are alight, celebrating the festive season. Join Sunshine Coast Afloat on Hela-Va-Jet and see some of the most spectacular sites. Come join them on a BYO cruise through the canals enjoying the light show from the houses that line the shores of these picturesque waterways.

Enjoy a two-hour cruise on the Mooloolaba Harbour, River and canals with Coastal Cruises Mooloolaba. Purchase dinner aboard and enjoy entertaining commentary from the crew. The boat is a fully licensed bar so settle in for a relaxed cruise as you take in the coastal scenery over a cold bevvy or cool cocktail. 

Join the MV Noosa Queen for a sunset river cruise, rounding off your perfect day in the Noosa region. You will wind your way from Noosa Marina, past Richard Branson’s Makepeace Island and the North Shore ferry crossing to the stunning Lake Cooroibah. Witness a stunning Noosa sunset whilst sipping on a glass of wine or a cold beer from the fully licensed bar.

Take to the Caloundra waterways to enjoy sunset on Friday and Saturday for a BYO sunset cruise with Caloundra Cruise. Sit back and relax with your favourite drink and reflect in the glow of a Glasshouse Mountain Sunset. Relax downstairs or take in a 360-degree view upstairs becoming one with your surroundings. 

2. Aussie World Christmas Spectacular

Meet Santa and Mrs Claus at the Aussie World Chrismas Spectacular on 23 December, come face to face with Christmas characters, enjoy the roving carollers, watch the fireworks, wander through Santa’s village, meet the Aussie Kids and watch the Christmas show. There's also snow, pyrotechnics, laser-shows, Christmas lights and live entertainment. Enjoy rides, attractions and festive fun for the whole family.

3. New Year’s Eve

Don’t miss out on the amazing New Year’s Eve celebrations, with plenty of live entertainment, music and of course fireworks. Watch the sky light up in Caloundra, Mooloolaba, or Coolum or head to one of the many New Year's Eve events happening across the coast including Woodford Folk Festival and live music at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi, Coolum Beach Hotel

4. Full moon horse ride

Held once a month on the night of the full moon, Rainbow Beach Horse Rides journey along picturesque Rainbow Beach whilst the sun is setting and watch the moon rise over the ocean.  It is a truly unforgettable experience, the moonlight reflecting off the water as a gentle breeze blows through. It sets a romantic and relaxed mood, and they can promise it is something you will never forget. Their team also carry a waterproof camera to photograph each ride, which are made available to you free of charge. Or enjoy a Country Full Moon Ride, which includes an incredible lunch at Silky Oak Tea Gardens before venturing to the top of Mount Goomboorian. Once at the top of the mountain we watch the sun set and the full moon rise, whilst enjoying some refreshments and taking in the amazing views from around the campfire.  We definitely recommend booking in advance. The next Beach Full Moon Ride available is Wednesday 31 January and the next Country Full Moon Ride is Thursday 1 February.

5. Catch ups over drinks and dinner

Let the inner foodie run wild at some super groovy restaurants and bars across the Sunshine Coast. Check out the new venues including The Dock, Backlane Bar & Tapas in Mooloolaba, or head to local favourites Brouhaha, Woodfire Grill, The Basement, The Pocket Espresso Bar, 26 degrees Bar & Venue, or Noosa Beach House and settle in for a night of laughter, good times and even better food and drinks.

6. Twilight Markets 

The Twilight Markets Caloundra are set to bring holiday spirit to Bulcock Beach. The markets will operate over the December/January holiday periods and provide over 100 stalls that will line the street of Bulcock Beach, street entertainment and a wide selection of food stalls, there is something to amuse the whole family. The Caloundra Twilight Markets are held every Friday starting until the 26 January.

Head to Coolum’s Tickle Park for a night of vibrant market fun on the beachfront. Enjoy wandering through 65 stalls. There will be a wide variety of goods for sale, ideal for Christmas gifts, selling handmade and new clothing, art and craft by locals, woodwork, jewellery, sunglasses, spices, children's toys and entertainment, fruit and vegetables, fudge, snow cones and so much more. The Coolum Twilight Markets are held every Friday for nine weeks over Christmas/New Year, starting 25 November until the 19 January. 

Enjoy retail therapy under the stars with a fabulous selection of art and craft stalls at Eumundi night markets. The village of Eumundi will sparkle, with village shops and the trees in the market precinct lit up with Christmas lights. Caplick Park playground will be transformed into an enchanted forest with special animations and attractions including one of Santa's elves climbing an aerial silk circus rig, along with a sensational laser light show. Santa will arrive via fire truck at the Eumundi Night Markets at 6.30 pm each Friday night and will be available for Santa photos with market visitors.

Come along to the Nambour Community Carols and experience the wonderful Twilight Markets, decked out with strings of fairy lights and over 40+ stalls. Find that special Christmas gift and enjoy music entertainment, food and free tea and coffee, an animal farm, face painting, jumping castles and slides before settling in for a night of carols and fireworks. 

7. Woodford Folk Festival 

The Woodford Folk Festival is an event of international standing held annually over six days and six nights from December 27 to January 1. Experience more than 2,000 performers as they take part in a line-up featuring local, national and international artists. The festival programme includes concerts, dances, street theatre, writers’ panels, film festival, comedy sessions, acoustic jams, social dialogue and debate, folk medicine, an entire children’s festival, an environmental programme featuring talks, debates and films, art and craft workshops, circus performances and workshops, late night cabarets, parades and special events including a spectacular fire display.

Movies on the beach 

A beautiful sunset and the golden sand of Mooloolaba Beach makes for the perfect location for the free Cinema in the Sand movie series these summer holidays. BYO blanket, towel, bean bag or beach chair and grab some delicious takeaway from one of the nearby restaurants such as Augellos, The Dock or Mooloolaba Surf Club, then sit back relax and enjoy popular family-friendly movies from Saturday the 16 December until Saturday 20 January.

8. Nights on Ocean Street

Immerse yourself amongst the bustle of people, the ever changing atmosphere of sounds, fragrances, local art and produce, great food and music well after most places on the Coast have gone to bed. Nights on Ocean Street are held every second Friday. The next markets are on the 5 January and 19 January.

9. Mooloolaba Christmas Boat Parade 

Christmas time is always a special time on the Sunshine Coast. The city lights up with Christmas fever, and everyone is invited to celebrate the merry time, even our local boats. Each year the Mooloolaba Yacht Club organisers the spectacular Mooloolaba Christmas Boat Parade. This is a great event for the whole family to enjoy. Sit and watch as the glittering boats float past, and join in the fun voting for the Best Dressed Boat and Best Dressed House.
