Notice is given that the annual general meeting of Visit Sunshine Coast Ltd will be held as follows:

Venue: Maroochy RSL, 105 Memorial Avenue, Maroochydore
Date: Wednesday 20 November 2019
Registration: 3.30pm - 4.00pm
Meeting opens: 4.00pm

The agenda and business of the meeting shall be:

  1. Welcome by the Chair
  2. Apologies
  3. To confirm the minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 21 November 2018
  4. Chairman’s report
  5. To receive and consider the Company’s financial reports and the reports of the Directors and Auditor for the financial year ended 30 June 2019.
  6. Company Auditor to announce the elected members to the Board of Directors for the relevant terms as specified in Rule 22.1 a) of the Constitution
  7. Chairman to announce the skilled based members to the Board of Directors for the relevant terms as specified in Rule 22.1(a) of the Constitution
  8. To appoint an auditor for the ensuing year
  9. General Business

Board Election

After undertaking a nomination process, Visit Sunshine Coast has received SEVEN (7) nominations for two available Member Elected Director positions.

As with previous years, Visit Sunshine Coast has adopted an electronic voting system. Accordingly members eligible to vote will receive an email, sent to their nominated email address, entitled “VOTE NOW – 2019/20 VSC Member Elected Directors“.

Please note, only financial members as at 30 June 2019 that have also renewed their membership for 2019/20 will be entitled to vote.  All votes must be cast and received by 5pm, Tuesday 19 November 2019 .

The voting process will be managed by the company’s auditor, Poole Group and accordingly Visit Sunshine Coast will not have access to votes, nor be privy to the results of voting until the Annual General Meeting.

The Sunshine Coast’s Regional Tourism Organisation, Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC), is seeking suitably qualified individuals to nominate themselves for potential election as a Member-elected Director on the Visit Sunshine Coast Board.

The Board is comprised of three Member-elected positions, and six skills-based positions, one of whom is the Chair.  There is currently two (2) vacancies for Member-elected positions.

The call for nominations for election to the Board is being made in accordance with rules 23 and 24 of the Company’s Constitution.

2019 Nominations

Donna Niadzov

Donna Niazov is the CEO of Family Friendly Carpet and Pest Control, a local Sunshine Coast business that services over 90 resorts, accommodation providers, restaurants and cafes from Caloundra to Noosa.

Donna is a renowned business leader on the Sunshine Coast taking innovative approaches to business covering all facets including planning, operations, systems development, marketing, PR and customer relations.

She is an experienced board member being the past president of the Sunshine Coast Jewish Community. She represented the Executive Committee of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, has held the position of event chair on the Sunshine Coast Businesswomen’s Network and has also held numerous other positions on regional committees across 3 different countries.

The Sunshine Coast’s ethnic diversity is evolving quickly and Donna’s passion for multiculturalism enables her to provide unique insights to maximum opportunities for cultural inclusivity within the tourism industry.

Donna is an extremely active and passionate resident of the Sunshine Coast and applies innovative thinking to business and community development and is personally committed to the sustainable growth of the region.

Brett Thompson

Currently General Manager of Landmark Resort & Spa Mooloolaba, I have been in the position for 2 years. Member of the management committee for the Mooloolaba Chamber of Commerce including Chairman of the Accommodation Sub-Committee. Member of VSC’s Sub-Regional Tourism Committee. I am also a committee member for Sunshine Coast branch of ARAMA (Australian Resident Accommodation Managers Association) & a member of Skal. In 2009 I was recognised at the HMAA National Accommodation Industry Awards for Excellence with an ACES Award for outstanding Attitude, Commitment, Enthusiasm & Service to the Accommodation Industry.

I have been involved in the Tourism Industry for the past 30 years in Senior Management positions & held various roles with Tourism related organisations. I have worked along the East Coast of Qld in all of the major Tourist Destinations including Cairns, Whitsundays, Gold Coast & Capricorn. Businesses have included major resorts in the Whitsundays; leasehold Motels in Cairns & Rockhampton; Management Rights in Townsville & Sunshine Coast.

Prior to arriving on the Sunshine Coast I was the owner operator of Mariners North Holiday Apartments (Management Rights) in Townsville for 10 years. I was a member of the Tourism Strategic Advisory committee & member of the Bid Fund for Townsville Enterprise the RTO. I continue to maintain a financial interest in the management rights in Townsville. In addition to my roles for the RTO in Townsville I was the President of the ARAMA branch & was President of Skal.

I spent 6 years in Rockhampton as owner operator of 2 leasehold Motels. It was during this period I was Vice Chairman of Capricorn Tourism, Chairman of the Central Qld Branch of HMAA & State Committee member for HMAA (Hotel, Motel Accommodation Association). I was involved in the merger of the State Branch of HMAA into a National Organisation now known as Accommodation Association of Aust.

Tim Fraser

I am passionate in giving back to the community and would like to see the Sunshine Coast develop to be a world class destination whilst embracing environmentally friendly approaches. Examples would be fast train travel, a permanent dock for cruise ships, a pier for amusements. Five-star hotels. I

I enjoy giving back to the community and would like to serve as a board member of Visit Sunshine Coast. I would listen to your concerns and advocate for you.  Currently I Q4 District Magazine Editor for the Lion Hunter for the past five years communicating news to members within the district and interstate and now public relations officer. At club level with Mooloolaba Lions, Past President/ Public Relations Officer/ guest speaker bookings officer. Through my clubs fundraising with the Fisherman’s Road Market and donating equipment to Local Ambulance Association Nambour, Life Flight and a mobile shower unit to the Shack in Nambour it was necessary to do several Television interviews. This year we have now donated over $2,000,000 back to the local community. Previously in New Zealand, I was a Leo club member with both the Mangere and Howick clubs, a senior Leader at YMCA Camp Adair and is a holder of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

Over the years, have acquired experience as a Night Manager/ Duty Manager in accommodation hotels in England, Australia and New Zealand. Have been an Armoured Truck Driver. I Currently work in the Retail Sector additionally also work as integrated health practitioner specialising in Energy Healing (Reiki) and Psychotherapy. Other passions are writing poetry and art.

Zoe Sparks 

Zoë Sparks has been firmly entrenched in travel and events throughout her career and has resided primarily on the Sunshine Coast since 1988. Since 2000, Zoë has run travel agencies here, alongside her Conference/Event Management company and was contracted as the Jetset Travelworld’s Group Conference Manager (now helloworld) for 19 years, building extensive networks and contacts in the industry she loves.

Zoë’s business, Spectacular Events Pty Ltd t/a Spectacular World Travel was inducted into the Sunshine Coast Business Awards’ Hall of Fame in 2005. Zoë herself has been recognised as a 2017 IML Owner / Entrepreneur Leader Regional Finalist, a two time Telstra Business Women’s Qld Finalist and a former Sunshine Coast Outstanding Business Woman of the Year. Zoë has also held a number of Board  and committee positions, including:

  • President of the Jetset Travelworld Group National Franchise Council
  • Board Member – Sunshine Coast TAFE Advisory Board
  • Vice President – SCBWN
  • Committee member of Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce,
  • Cindy MacKenzie Breast Cancer Foundation Board Member (Events)
  • Judge – Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards

Zoë has worked in travel and events for the past 29 years, as a business owner, franchisee, employee, volunteer and charity fundraiser. She has experienced business from all angles and understands the importance of looking at things from the perspective of all stake holders. She is a great networker, connector and collaborator and Zoë also relishes her role as a mother to two teenage boys.

Darren Gertler

Darren is the Director of Marketing for Australia Zoo, setting the strategic direction for the broader marketing team including sales, public relations, web and advertising. He ensures this globally recognized brand remains a leader within the tourism industry and continues to spread our conservation mission.

He manages a multi-disciplinary marketing team (Graphics, Events, Public Relations, Web, Sales) providing strategic vision and direction whilst coordinating all operational aspects of the department, including its policies and procedures.

This includes the strategy and coordination of all advertising and promotional campaigns for Australia Zoo, ensuring that all advertising and visual communications adhere to the development and execution of a clearly defined communication strategy in both traditional and digital mediums.

In addition to managing the marketing for Australia Zoo, he is also the Head of Strategic Development for Wildlife Warriors, the global conservation charity created in 2002 by Steve and Terri Irwin.  Leading a team of passionate wildlife conservationists both in Australia and the US, we inspire people to protect our wildlife and wild places around the world. 

I believe the above makes me particularly well equipped to assist the VSC board given expertise in digital marketing and social media, strong tourism industry networks, community engagement and corporate governance.  I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue to promote this spectacular region.

Dr Vikki Schaffer

With effective leadership, strong community engagement, and a passion for supporting regional tourism that protects what we and our visitors come to enjoy, I believe I can make a positive contribution to the VSC Board.

Strong tourism industry and Local Government networks and community and stakeholder engagement: As a long-time resident of the Sunshine Coast, local volunteer, tourism academic at USC (teaching locally and internationally), previous Noosa Biosphere Social Board member and Ambassador with the Sunshine Coast Council Tourism, Sport and Leisure Taskforce, I have engaged with and developed an extensive network within tourism, leisure, and events on the Sunshine Coast (and beyond). In addition, through regionally partnered research (e.g. value of the ex-HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park, whale tourism, CoastSnap and TurtleCare) and supervising over 250 industry-student projects and internships; guest speaker at industry and community events and workshops (most recently: importance of stakeholder collaboration, leveraging industry cooperation, whale-related tourism and citizen science), I have a solid appreciation of our unique region and proactively strive to make positive contributions to regional resilience and sustainability. 

Digital marketing and social media: For almost 10 years, I have coordinated a final year course that was the first to introduce social media into assessment (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) within industry projects. In addition to research publications and student learning, this course has facilitated avenues to assist local TLE businesses to reduce the barriers to not only social media use, but innovation and technology more broadly, to increase skills and knowledge. In addition, I am editor on several platforms used to communicate with/promote industry. I also offer guidance to local businesses/community groups.

Qualification: Bachelor in Sustainable Tourism - Honours 1st Class, and Doctor of Philosophy (Tourism) Tourism Academic (Teaching and Research) at the University of the Sunshine Coast (since 2005)

Jennifer Swaine

Jennifer is passionate and proud to call the Sunshine Coast home! As the Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards and Secretary of the Sunshine Coast Chambers Alliance, Jennifer engages with the businesses that make up the fabric of this great region and actively promotes, connects and collaborates with others to promote and increase the profile of the greater Sunshine Coast.

Jennifer has a regular weekly business column in the Sunshine Coast Daily and is a regular public speaker and emcee.

On relocating to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney in 2010, Jennifer started a three- and half-year tenure with Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers where she was responsible for the management of branding, marketing, advertising, social media, communications, all events and public relations of the firm. She went on to join Wishlist, where she was responsible for all the marketing/ communications and strategic partnership relations. Following this Jennifer then spent two and a half years with Ray White Commercial as Marketing Communications Manager before starting her own marketing/communications and executive relocation business in 2017 – Jennifer Swaine Marketing & Communications.
