A 30-minute drive from Noosa Heads will take you to the Noosa Everglades, one of only two everglades systems in the world that stretches across two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves - the Noosa and Great Sandy - in the upper reaches of the Noosa River. Known as the River of Mirrors because of the amazing reflections in the water, the Noosa Everglades is a 60km stretch of pristine waters, magnificent flora and fauna and narrow waterways.
This unique environment is relatively untouched and is one of Australia’s most diverse ecosystems. In fact, more than 40% of Australia's bird species are found here.
Explore the everglades by kayak with Kanu Kapers or with a glass of sparkling in hand with Everglades Eco Safaris, before spending the night on the banks of Lake Cootharaba at Habitat Noosa Everglades Ecocamp.
As well as the Everglades, the Noosa Hinterland is home to a number of charming country towns.
Jump in the car for a memorable road trip through Boreen Point, Kin Kin, Pomona, Cooran and Cooroy, making sure to stop into the boutique breweries, local distilleries, country pubs and homely cafes that make the region so inviting.
Boreen Point, a township on Lake Cootharaba, is the perfect setting for sailing, kayaking and spotting an array of native wildlife including kangaroos and birds. The historic Apollonian Hotel is a popular stop for a refreshment.
Nearby Kin Kin began its days as a timber town and was famous for its much sought after cedars and eucalypts. In later years it became a perfect area for dairy farming, and today many artists reside in the area. Make sure to stop in for a meal at Black Ant Gourmet @ Kin Kin General Store, where local produce is celebrated.
Continue your road trip to Pomona, home of the gruelling King of the Mountain Race
that takes athletes to the summit of Mt Cooroora. You can take on the mountain at your own pace, the climb well worth once you see the spectacular views from the summit. Back in town enjoy a locally distilled gin at Pomona Distilling Co, l
ocated in the original Pomona Bakery which dates from the early 1900s.
Cooran offers hinterland tranquillity and a quirky collection of artisan outlets, vintage wares and eateries. Create your own tasting trail visiting Bonsai Brewery and Amrita Park Meadery or for the adventurous hit the trails in Woondum National Park with Noosa Quad Bike Adventures.
Finish your trip at Cooroy, which is fast becoming a local hotspot. First stops are Copperhead Brewery, providing quality food and small batch beers, and 20 20 Distillery, makers of high-end spirits. Home of the Australian Body Art Festival, spend a morning or afternoon strolling around this charming hinterland town, as there are numerous galleries, antiques and vintage treasures, including the Cooroy Mill Place Precinct including the Butter Factory Arts Centre.
