Tucked between the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park and the Noosa North Shore is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best-kept secrets, the Noosa Everglades. Part of the Noosa Biosphere, this 60 km stretch of breathtaking waterway is one of only two everglades in the world - the other being Florida’s Everglades National Park.
Just two hours north of Brisbane, Elanda Point is the southern gateway to the Cooloola Recreation Area and is part of the Great Sandy National Park. The Elanda Point Education Centre and Adventure Park on Lake Cootharaba with its range of amenities including walking trails, an education centre, camping and group hut accommodation, as well as boat and hiking equipment hire - make it the ideal starting point for many Everglades adventures. There are wonderful places to camp right across the Everglades – from fully serviced campsites such as Boreen Point Campground and Elanda Point Education Centre and Adventure Park, to get-away-from-it-all, self-sufficient campsites in the Cooloola Recreation Area. Don’t forget to book in with the Queensland National Parks Booking Service before you depart.
You could easily spend days in this untouched wilderness. Hire a kayak and set your own pace to explore the water-lily lined waters and discover secret banks and beaches which beckon to be explored. Marvel at the mirage-like reflections of the flora on the banks of the water. Keep a look out for some of the 44% of Australian bird species that visit or live in the area including pelicans, ducks, cormorants, eagles and the rare jabiru. You can also join a wilderness tour and be guided through this magical waterscape, enjoy a catered lunch or BBQ on the riverbank and break up your day with a cooling dip in the pristine waters of this aquatic paradise.
