Joe Furlonger: Horizons

Drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Collection, Joe Furlonger: Horizons surveys the celebrated Queensland artist's career across painting, ceramics, sculpture and drawing. Works from Caloundra Regional Gallery's collection are also included, providing further insight into the breadth of Furlonger's practice. Born in Cairns in 1952 and raised in the Samford Valley near Brisbane, Furlonger developed a deep connection to the Australian landscape through his experiences working on farms and fishing trawlers. After studying under leading artists, including Roy Churcher, and attending the Queensland College of Art, he established drawing as a lifelong daily practice and the foundation of his creative process. Furlonger gained national recognition in 1987 when his large-scale painting Bathers won the prestigious Mot & Chandon Fellowship, leading to a residency in France and helping shape the direction of his artistic career. Across more than four decades, recurring themes of the human figure, land and seascapes have defined his work. Characterised by expressive line, spontaneity and an enduring curiosity about the world, Furlonger's art captures both the energy and beauty of everyday life and the Australian environment.
