The ultimate guide to mountain biking on the Sunshine Coast

Starting in the south, let’s kick this off at Ferny Forest Mountain Bike Loop, Ewen Maddock Dam.

Located just a twenty minute drive from Caloundra and five minutes from Landsborough, we’ll give you approximately two minutes of riding time to figure out why this magical 12km loop is called “Ferny Forest”. Lush green ferns and a stunning forest canopy surround this really rideable; incredibly fun singletrack loop.

For the beginner or a family looking for a morning adventure, this is the absolutely perfect place to start out. Enjoy the satisfaction of riding sweet singletrack, tackling a couple of not too tricky rock gardens, and generally covering a beautiful section of trail without any scary descents or lung busting climbs. Stop for a breather and find yourself taking in views across the reflective waters of Ewen Maddock Dam to the distinctive Glasshouse Mountains in the distance.

This is a popular family ride because it’s flat and scenic - and although the loop is one way for the majority of the ride, you can follow signage to shortcut home via firetrail if little legs have had enough for the day.

For the more advanced rider, push yourself to ride hard and fast, or put in a couple of laps and see how you shape up with the locals on Strava. These trails are home to an annual XC race so there are some hot times to beat!

However fast you’re riding, make sure you keep an eye out for the locals. Ferny Forest is home to native birdlife including majestic black cockatoos, goannas and even a koala or two if you keep your eyes peeled amongst the leafy foliage.

Time it right and wrap up your ride with a Brewhaha coffee. This friendly owner of this cute little coffee caravan in the car park will whip you up a hot brew or a refreshing juice. Otherwise, head into nearby Landsborough for baked goods and post ride caffeination or drive down to the beach at Happy Valley or Kings Beach for a post ride ocean dip and a bite to eat.
