The Hinterland

The Hinterland

Beyond the beaches of the Sunshine Coast you’ll find a rich array of charming villages, country towns and breathtaking scenery.

The Hinterland feels a world away, but in reality is only a short 30-minute drive from the beach. Here friendly locals welcome visitors with a smile, and the pristine landscape is home to pockets of sub-tropical rainforest, cooling waterfalls and sweeping views just waiting to be explored.

One of the best ways to take in the Hinterland is by car. Your first stop? The Glass House Mountains.

These ancient volcanic peaks are actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred more than 25 million years ago. Today, the Glass House Mountains and surrounding hinterland are favourites with wellness-lovers, cyclists and trekkers, and there are a vast range of well-established tracks to explore.

From there take a drive up the Blackall Range, where the hills are alive with food, drink and art. Villages such as Maleny and Kenilworth are synonymous with the best dairy and cheese products in Australia (make sure to stop in to Maleny Food Co, Maleny Cheese, Maleny Dairies or Kenilworth Dairies) and Montville is known for its artistic flair, with a number of galleries and talented creatives.

For nature lovers, there is no beating Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, a pocket of sub-tropical rainforest with sweeping views of the Glass House Mountains, or Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, a privately owned garden, home to beautiful landscaping and aviaries of native
and exotic birds.

The Hinterland is also home to one of the Sunshine Coast’s most spectacular treks – the Hinterland Great Walk – which stretches 58.8km through the Blackall Range. Adventure lovers can do it in its entirety across four-days, or day-trippers can get a taste by taking part in one of the shorter waterfall circuits in Montville’s Kondalilla National Park.

No Hinterland escape would be complete without staying in one of the region’s luxury lodges or relaxed retreats, with an abundance of boutique accommodation providers available to suit all tastes and budgets.
