We always knew the Sunshine Coast Hinterland had a little extra sparkle, and now we’ve got the star power to prove it.
In June 2026, a Dark Sky Reserve was established across 870 square kilometres of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, making it one of the best places in Australia to stargaze.
The Dark Sky Reserve designation is the first of its kind in Queensland only the second in Australia, but what exactly is it and what makes the Sunshine Coast Hinterland so special? We unpack why the Hinterland lights up when the sun goes down.
What is a Dark Sky Reserve?
A Dark Sky Reserve is an international designation made through the International Dark Sky Paces program that recognises places across the world that are committed to preserving and protecting dark skies.
The designation recognises areas with exceptional night sky quality – like the Sunshine Coast Hinterland – that are free from human-caused light pollution.
With more than 80% of the world’s population living under skyglow, we think that’s pretty special.
It also aims to protect these areas into the future through responsible lighting policies.

What makes the Sunshine Coast Hinterland perfect for stargazing?
Night sky quality in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is so exceptional that, on a clear night, you can see up to 2,000 stars (without a telescope)!
The Blackall Range – where much of the Dark Sky Reserve sits - naturally provides a buffer from the skyglow of surrounding coastal and urban areas. The Dark Sky Reserve is one of the natural wonders that make our UNESCO Biosphere so special.
Thanks to this minimal light pollution, these elevated Hinterland areas offer incredible visibility perfect for spotting everything from constellations to shooting stars and even the shimmering arc of the Milky Way.
The Dark Sky Reserve is also easily accessible from the state’s capital Brisbane, making it the perfect spot for a weekend with the stars.
As well as covering the townships of Maleny, Mapleton, Montville, Witta, Flaxton, Kenilworth and Conondale, the Sunshine Coast’s Dark Sky Reserve includes local conversation areas, helping preserve wildlife and ecosystems into the future.
